Reservation for backward castes sounds plausible if approached with seriousness and honesty. Though an overwhelming interest on the part of politicians made this timely debate suspicious to common man.

For past three-four months, politicians of all political parties, intended verbally at least, in providing a certain platform to students of backward castes a system of reservation is essential. Ministers even cited the example of four southern states to imply the success of this system. Presupposing about the same success that the southern states had as to rest of the country without providing basic infrastructure actually hints to some other interests not necessarily related with reservation in its true nature.

Indian Political parties don’t approach a problem without equating all-important ‘vote bank’ with it. Thus, when a closer look is being given it becomes evident that the assembly election is nearing in some of those states whose politicians have been the most enthusiastic lot in this entire issue. With the most numbers of assembly and parliament seat the Uttar Pradesh is always a lucrative state in Indian politics. This equation played an important part keeping in view the next assembly election there. It’s well known that the gateway of ‘caste politics’ in India is the UP. This was vindicated in this case beyond any doubt.

Surely, the need of improving the life of unprivileged people is one necessary issue. Much more important is the way the problem should be tackled. Improving the primary education and making a large percentage of people compelled to have the primary education are some of the innumerable measures that needed to be taken up without any further delay. Otherwise non-continuation to highly specialized studies like management, medical studies or engineering by these students would only result in the wastage of a vast numbers of seat.
