Soft drinks are one of the most favorites to meet the quench. Other than coconut water, known for its freshness rather than the taste, these soft drinks remain as the only respite.
Recently an NGO named Center for Science and Environment, came out with a study showing the level of pesticides used in these drinks are notably high and potentially extremely harmful for the normal human body. This issue first came up five-six years ago when, as usually, the entire matter was given a decent burial after having some initial hue and cry.
In their expansive throughout the country study the concerned NGO showed that the level of pesticides are dangerously high in some metropolises of the country. Although after few days of time rather hastily even without any report of laboratory the ministers started to give statements about the ‘absurdity’ of the allegations keeping in the view the ‘credibility’ of the companies and the probable ‘malicious effort’ to bring these companies to disrepute. Within a couple of days the final laboratory tests done under the government initiative were made open and accordingly the level of pesticide used were well within the international convention.
The first and probably the most important revelation has been that this country doesn’t have any officially mentioned level for using the pesticides in drinks. As a result the companies are free to add any level of pesticide, permitted under the regulations of acclaimed international level of pesticide in a drink. In this case, it has been claimed that since the international level is much more authentic, keeping in view the strict regulations that everyone has to go through, the level used in India is definitely without any dangers.
