No More Veils for Pakistani Women Lawyers
Bodhisatta , Kolkata: Nov 19 2006

When the world is becoming increasingly divided in the issue of wearing veil a Pakistani court ordered to not wear them at the time of proceedings.

The observation regarded by many as one landmark in a country where fundamentalists are slowly acquiring a ubiquitous position. According to Daily Times’ report Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court Tariq Pervaiz Khan told a veiled lawyer Raees Anjum during a proceedings when Anjum was seeking adjournment of a case. When asked Anjum had to repeat her name several times since the Chief Justice couldn’t hear her name due to the veil that she wore, and compelled the Chief Justice to made the landmark observation.

According to Chief Justice, as reported by the Daily Times, lawyers are professionals and they should be dressed as is requisite for lawyers. He went to add that the Judges often couldn’t identify lawyers with veils and expressed doubt if the latter come several times to seek adjournment for others cases.

Later when contacted Anjum expressed her embarrassment over the entire incident.

It’s heartening to notice that the judiciary can make a landmark observation like this even in a hostile situation where the fundamentalism is becoming the order of the day.
