As the number of infiltrators keeps raising the Indian government has decided to provide the Border Security Force with the Israeli gadgets.
These reconnaissance units from Israel known as LORROS as claimed, would be highly effective in Indian conditions. There are some obvious advantages over the present system that prompted the security agencies to choose for this system. According to senior officials the present system of thermal imagers can’t really be trusted in different weather conditions due to its heat-sensor response technique. The differentiation between the animal and human movement is also not possible from this system often leaving security personnel completely helpless.
The infiltrators can easily evade present surveillance if equipped with necessary covers, is one very alarming factor that go against the thermal-imagers. With the number of infiltrators rising to 299 until June 2006 against 92 of the last year along Line of Control, the ineffectiveness of the system is making itself prominent. A.K.Mitra, chief of BSF, laid much more importance in India-Bangladesh border where thousands of infiltrators continue to sneak in, evading this system.
The LORROS, according to officers, is capable of monitoring of human and other movements along the border from a distance of 40 kilometers. Comprising a night camera, video surveillance system and one laser-range finder this system is already been tested successfully by the Indian army on its claimed effectiveness.
Mitra added further that the system, which has been used successfully in Israel-Lebanon and Israel-Palestine borders, would be mounted firstly in India-Bangladesh border and subsequently to India-Pakistan border.
