Sports as is always said helps to build a nation. The childhood experience made us consider the sports as something of immense value to build a sense of discipline, brotherhood and thus a better human being. Though the present experience, perhaps, is compelling us to build a certain kind of aversion to many fields related with Indian sports.
Often it is said that the economic implications of cricket made all the other insignificant. Here the word implications point to a vast array of things including the popularity of players from the point of view of marketability. It is propounded that no other game in present scenario is this much capable as cricket in the context of identifying with everyday life of common people.
All these statements are made without necessarily any expansion leave alone the explanation. The approach that makes the cricket as the main perpetrator for the kind of turmoil through which Indian sports is passing by does somewhere miss other reasons that potentially can become the more important one than this rather convoluted logic. The fact that Indian cricket was not that popular as it is now before winning the world cup of 1983 says a lot in this regard. In any field the common people perhaps searches for someone who is able to perform in an international format. It is well known to us about the kind of celebration that awaits Lata Mangeshkar or A.R.Rehman throughout the world. The reason that performing in a way that can even leave behind other international singers in the question of selling-off of cassettes is one of supreme importance that plays a part in this case. In the scenario of sports it’s really amazing that other than very few not much of the games can compete in international level.
The question that can now be raised is about the infrastructure that is scheduled to be there to build a team of international standard. The governmental policies are a monumental failure in this case. It was a humble expectation that like other schemes the sports would also make an important part in the endless planning that we have had in many other sections. Though, to its most useless form there are plenty of politicians now in the highest echelons of the various sports bodies. Those that are free of them, yet, the effort is on to put some stooges in those all important designations in the form of civil servants. The neat result of all these efforts is nowhere even near to improvement since the people at the highest positions are often interested in the status that comes with it and not that much in the sports itself or improving the environment that can actually conduce the standard of the performance in the field. In this scenario it’s really difficult even to dream representing in international events.
This cyclic order is indeed frustrating but keeping the present scenario in view, specially the kind of importance that politicians get, there is hardly any other chance to succeed. Until at least some of the games can perform in the international arena this indifferent approach will continue.
